REBUILD The European Cities of Tomorrow
The aim of the EU REBUILD Initiative is to promote the development of urban environments from a global, innovative, and resource-saving viewpoint. These cities should be sustainable and use advanced models of organization that improve quality of life, the restoration of social equilibrium, and the protection of cultural heritage.
The REBUILD Initiative includes:
– 2 conferences on the topics of Shaping our European Cities for the 21st Century (Florence 1998 & Barcelona 1999). Targeting urban policymakers, planners, representatives of local authorities, municipal utilities, social and economic actors who play a role in the building sector and those involved in the area of the environmentally conscious production and use of energy.
Main topics addressed by the conferences include: Urban planning for sustainable development; Protection of cultural heritage with low energy technologies in building restoration and construction; and Sustainable mobility in the urban context.
– An informative catalogue (published in 2000) on How to Integrate Renewable Energies in European Cities with an illustration of best practices.
