BIO4A project aimed at advancing the industrial-scale production and market uptake of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Europe. The project focused on SAF produced through the HEFA pathway using residual lipids, such as Used Cooking Oil, and enabled large-scale, pre-commercial production of ASTM-certified fuel within the EU.

In addition, BIO4A investigated alternative sustainable feedstock supply options, including the cultivation of drought-resistant crops such as Camelina on marginal lands in Mediterranean regions. The project also assessed agronomic practices, including the use of biochar and soil amendments, to enhance soil fertility, improve resilience to climate change, and contribute to
carbon sequestration.

BIO4A validated the entire SAF value chain and logistics at industrial scale under market conditions and evaluated the environmental and socio-economic sustainability performance of the process. The produced SAF, compliant with conventional ASTM jet fuel standards, was supplied to commercial airlines for use in regular passenger flights, supporting EU objectives for the decarbonization of the aviation sector.
