The SEAFAIRER project aims to produce advanced intermediate biofuels to decarbonize maritime shipping using a patented thermochemical process from Fraunhofer UMSICHT. It processes three biogenic feedstocks—rice husks from Spain, biowaste from Germany, and agave bagasse from Mexico—sourced sustainably without iLUC issues. The single-stage pyrolysis and integrated post-reforming convert them into carbon-negative biochar, raw intermediate biofuel, and syngas. The biofuel follows two pathways: direct use (Pathway A) or minor upgrading in existing refineries (Pathway B).
Life-cycle, techno-economic, and cost analyses support commercialization, culminating in a 30-day demonstration onboard a vessel in the Port of Valencia, monitoring emissions and performance.
