BUTTERFLY
Flexible and efficient coproduction of clean fuels for hard-to-decarbonize sectors
Summary
BUTTERFLY (Biomass Utilized To The Extended portfolio of Renewable Fuels with Large Yields) is a project funded by Horizon Europe, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, lasting 40 months, with a budget of approximately 10M€.
The aim of BUTTERFLY is to develop an innovative, flexible and efficient coproduction of clean fuels, from waste and residual feedstock. This process will produce advanced biofuels and renewable fuels (rDME – Renewable DiMethyl Ether and SNG – Synthetic Natural Gas), with multiple applications in the marine and heavy-duty transport, in the steel industry and in off-grid energy supply. BUTTERFLY circular value chains will support the displacement of fossil fuels in hard-to-decarbonize sectors, contributing to Europe’s climate-neutral energy priorities.
With a consortium of 10 partners from 7 different EU countries, BUTTERFLY will have a strong interdisciplinary approach, that will help the project in reaching the objectives of improve feedstock-to-fuel conversion efficiency, optimize the synergy between rDME and SNG production and achieve up to 97% of carbon fixation efficiency.
